You’re driving to work, or heading on a road trip, and something scary happens – a light on your dashboard comes on. You automatically think something is wrong with your car and it’s going to break down soon. You don’t even know what the light is, so you quickly Google it or check your owner’s manual. You should never ignore them, and you also shouldn’t panic until you know what they mean.
Some lights represent small issues that you can fix yourself, and others indicate more serious problems, and you need to take your car to a mechanic right away. Their color represents their urgency – green means a system or feature is on or working, yellow or amber means you should have something checked out soon, and red means there’s a problem that needs immediate attention. Here’s a guide to what some common dashboard symbols mean.
Low Fuel Light
It looks like a gas pump, and it means you’re running low on fuel. Your car might tell you that you have 20 miles left until empty, but you shouldn’t push it, and you should fill up at the closest gas station.
Seat Belt Reminder Light
It looks like a person with their seat belt on, and it means the driver or front passenger needs to buckle up.
Air Bag Indicator Light
It looks like someone sitting down with their seat belt on and a ball in their lap. It means there’s an issue with one or more of your car’s airbags, or the airbag system in general.
Door Open Light
It looks like a car with its doors open. It means one or more of your doors isn’t closed all the way. Some cars show you exactly which door is open.
Parking Brake Light
It looks like a circle with a capital “P” inside. It means your parking brake is engaged, and it needs to be disabled before you start driving.
Headlamp Indicator Light
It looks like a lightbulb, and it means your headlights are on.
Fog Lamp Indicator Light
It looks like a sideways jellyfish, and it means your fog lights are on.
Brake Hold Indicator Light
It looks like a circle with the word “hold” underneath it. It means your brake hold system is functioning properly.
Washer Fluid Indicator Light
It looks like a windshield with wipers and washer fluid. It means your washer fluid is low and needs to be refilled.
It looks like a car with a key under it, or a car with a lock on it. It means your theft-deterrent system isn’t working properly.
Hazard Lights Indicator Light
It looks like two red triangles inside one another. It means your car’s hazard lights are on.
Battery Alert Light
It looks like a battery with plus and minus symbols. It means your car is running off battery power because its charging system isn’t working. Your car will die once the battery is completely drained.
Check Engine Light
It looks like an engine, or a submarine. This light usually makes people think there’s something serious wrong with your car, but that’s not always the case. It could come on for several reasons, and most of them are routine maintenance issues. Whatever the issue is, it has to be addressed immediately to avoid further damage.
Engine Temperature Warning Light
It looks like a boat on water. It means your engine is over heating, and you need to stop driving as soon as you can. There are many things that can make your engine overheat, and most of them are fairly easy and cheap to repair. If you keep driving, though, the problem can get more serious and expensive to fix.
Tire Pressure Warning or Tire Pressure Monitoring System Light
It looks like a tire with an exclamation mark inside. It means the pressure in one or more of your tires is too low or too high, and needs to be checked. Driving on tires with too little or too much pressure can damage your vehicle or get you in an accident.
Oil Pressure Light
It looks like a leaking oil can, and it means there’s a problem with your car’s oil pressure system. It means you’re running low on oil, or there’s a problem with your car’s oil pressure system.
Automatic Shift Lock or Engine Start Indicator Light
It looks like a circle with a shoe inside. It usually means you’re trying to start your ignition or shift gears without engaging your brakes. The automatic shift lock will lock your vehicle in park or neutral until you engage them.
Traction Control Light
It looks like a car on a winding road, and it means your vehicle’s traction control system is activated. This system utilizes your anti-lock brake system to determine if one of your wheels is spinning faster than another. If it detects that a vehicle is slipping, it applies your brakes until it regains traction.
Traction Control Malfunction Light
It looks like a circle with a triangle and an exclamation mark inside. It could also look like the traction control light with an exclamation mark. It means there’s a problem with your traction control system is malfunctioning.
Anti-Lock Brake Warning Light
It looks like a circle with the letters “ABS” inside, and it means something is wrong with the system. Your anti-lock brakes keep your car in contact with the road, so this problem should be addressed as soon as possible.
Glow Plug Light
It looks like coils, and it’s only used in vehicles with diesel engines. It means the engine’s glow plugs are warming up, and the engine shouldn’t be started until the light goes out.
Diesel Particulate Filer Light
It looks like a rectangle with polka dots inside. It means the diesel particulate filter has failed its test and needs to be serviced.
Exhaust Fluid Light
It looks like exhaust fumes over water. It means the diesel exhaust fluid reservoir is low on fluid.
Water Fluid Filter Warning Light
It looks like a gas pump with drops of water. It means the water in the fuel filter has reached maximum capacity, and it needs to be drained.
