Almost all states require you to have car insurance. It’s great financial protection for you, your car, your passengers, and other drivers and their passengers. Some policies can be expensive, and you might be paying for add-ons that you don’t really need. So, here are some ways to get more affordable car insurance.
1. Don’t think that one insurance company is the cheapest.
You probably see a lot of ads for car insurance companies. And, in each one, the company is promising you that they have the lowest rates. But, a company that might be the cheapest for someone in a certain city or state might be more expensive for someone else in a different area. There isn’t one company that’s the cheapest for everyone.
2. Shop around and compare different insurance companies and their rates.
There are a few big-name insurance companies that pretty much anyone can name off the top of their head. There are also a lot of smaller companies that you may have never heard of. Check out rates for all companies that are available in your area. Also, check out their customer satisfaction ratings. One company might have the cheapest insurance, but their policies might not cover a lot, or they might have poor customer service.
3. Find any available discounts.
Many insurance companies offer discounts. You might be able to bundle auto, home, and other insurance policies at a better rate. It also might be cheaper to insurance multiple cars with one policy. And, it’s usually cheaper to pay for your insurance yearly or twice a year.
4. Check out usage-based or pay-per mile insurance plans.
These plans let your insurer track your driving. Then, you’ll get discounts based off of how much and how well you drive.
5. Raise your deductible.
The deductible is how much you have to pay out of pocket for repairs before your insurance covers the rest. If you get in an accident and there’s $5,000 worth of damages and your deductible is $500, then you only have to pay $500 for the repairs. If you have a higher deductible, you’ll have a lower insurance rate.
6. Don’t get unnecessary coverage.
If you have an older car, you might not want or need comprehensive and collision coverage. Your car might not be worth what you’re paying for this coverage. If you have a second car you can use if yours is totaled or needs repairs, then you also probably don’t need rental reimbursement coverage.
7. Review your coverage policy twice a year.
Insurance rates change often so companies can keep up with demand. Your insurer might be raising its rates while other companies are lowering theirs. You should call your insurer every 6 months to make sure you’re getting the best deal.
8. Always pay your insurance on time.
In many states, your credit score is a big factor in what kind of insurance rates you’ll get. Having a low score can increase your rates by hundreds of dollars. You can improve your score by always paying for your insurance on time. Then, you’ll get cheaper rates.
9. Practice safe driving habits.
The best way to get cheaper insurance is to be a safe driver. The less accidents you get in, the cheaper your rate will be. Some insurers have devices you can put in your car to monitor your driving. If it detects that you’re a safe and cautious driver, then the insurer will offer you cheaper insurance.
