Tires are one of the most important parts of your vehicle. They can last a very long time if you take proper care of them. If you do, you’ll have reduced stopping distance and better traction, and you’ll be safer on the road. If you take proper care of your tires, you won’t have to replace them as often, which means you save more money over the life of your vehicle. Proper maintenance can also improve your fuel economy and energy efficiency.
If you neglect your tires, you could end up in a bad car accident. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that almost one in ten car crashes is tire related. These crashes can be easily avoided, though, with regular tire maintenance. So, how can you take good care of your tires so they last as long as possible?
Inspect Your Tires Regularly
Your tires can sustain significant wear and tear or damage, and you don’t even realize it. If you simply inspect your tires every once in a while, you could see if there are any problems with them. You should also have them looked over by a professional at least once a year.
Check Your Tire Pressure
Tires lose pressure over time, and if yours are under-inflated, your car is three times more likely to end up in a sever crash. Over-inflated problems can also be a big problem. You should always keep a tire gauge in your car, and you should check your pressure at least once a month. The best time to check your pressure is when your tires are cool and have been sitting for at least an hour.
You can check your owner’s manual for the correct PSI, or amount of pressure, for your tires. The PSI can also be found on your tire placard, which can be found on your driver’s side doorjamb, door post glovebox, or the inside of the trunk lid. If your tire pressure is low by any amount of PSI, the outer edges of your tires will wear a lot faster than normal. If that happens, you will have worse fuel economy and further stopping distance, and your car could sway excessively when you’re turning or in windy conditions.
Rotate Your Tires Regularly
All tires ware down overtime because of the friction they experience with the road surface. Your front tires also wear out faster because they turn when you make turns. Having your tires rotated regularly – which means changing the position of each tire, like moving the front to the back and vice versa – prevents abnormal wear patterns. This should be done every 6,000 to 8,000 miles.
Check the Tread of Your Tires
The tread of your tires allows your vehicle to grip the road and maintain control. If the grooves are worn down, your vehicle can’t effectively grip the road. An easy way to test the tread is the “quarter test.” Insert a quarter headfirst into the area with the lowest tread. If the tread touches George Washington’s head, you have at least 4/32 inches remaining, and your tires are okay. If you can see all of George Washington’s head, your tire tread is at or below 4/32 inches, and your tires need to be replaced.
Get an Annual Wheel Alignment
When you hit bumps or potholes in the road, your wheels can be knocked out of alignment. They can also shift out of alignment over time, even you only drive on smooth surfaces. If your wheels are out of alignment, it can cause more wear on your tires, which can shorten their lifespan. You should have your wheels aligned by a mechanic once a year to prevent that from happening.
How to Get the Most Life Out of Your Tires
Here are some things you could do to help your tires last longer:
1. Follow speed limits. Driving faster can shorten your tread life.
2. Avoid sudden starts, stops, and turns whenever possible. Buring rubber can quickly ruin your tires.
3. Avoid rubbing your tires against curbs when you’re turning, parking, or at any other time.
4. Don’t overload your vehicle with cargo. Your manual lists your vehicle’s load limits.
