FWD vs. RWD vs. AWD vs. 4WD: What’s the Difference?

,

Vehicles come in many different sizes and styles with lots of different features, so there are many things to consider when you’re ready to buy your next ride. Should I get a small sedan or an SUV? How much technology do I want it to have? What kind of safety features are best for my family?

Another you have to figure out is what drivetrain is right for your needs. If you don’t know what that is, it’s the group of components that deliver power to your wheels. The four different types of drivetrains are front-wheel drive (FWD), rear-wheel drive (RWD), all-wheel drive (AWD), and four-wheel drive (4WD). So, what’s the difference?

Front-Wheel Drive

FWD is standard on many cars, crossovers and SUVs for several reasons. With this system, the power from the engine is delivered to the front wheels, so the car is basically being pulled down the road. The back wheels don’t receive power on their own. FWD vehicles are typically lighter, so they usually get better fuel economy and emit less carbon dioxide.

They can also maintain better traction over small hills or over light snow or ice because the weight of the engine is over the front wheels. With FWD, all of the mechanics are in the front of the vehicle. That means there’s more passenger and cargo space inside the car. FWD is a simpler system, so it’s easier and less expensive to maintain.

Rear-Wheel Drive

RWD is another type of two-wheel drive, and it’s basically the opposite of FWD. This system sends all of the engine’s power to the back wheels, so it’s like the vehicle is being pushed down the road. The weight of the vehicle is transferred to the rear when you accelerate, which generally boosts traction.

RWD vehicles usually have even weight distribution, which improves your overall balance and handling. With RWD trucks and SUVS, adding a load of cargo or towing a trailer helps improve traction. Having a trailer connected close to the driven wheels also helps improve your steering while you’re towing.

All-Wheel Drive

AWD can be founds on all kinds of vehicles, from sports cars to trucks and SUVs. As the name suggests, this system gives power to all four wheels all the time. If one wheel starts to slip, the other three can help out. Most AWD systems primarily deliver power to one set of wheels, the front or back. When slippage is detected at one axle, power is diverted to the other axle in hopes of finding more traction.

There’s also part-time AWD. This system sends torque to either the front or back wheels, and the other wheels are automatically engaged when road conditions demand extra traction. AWD provides better traction in snowy conditions and over moderate off-road terrain. It can help you move through mud, sand, and other loose surfaces.

Four-Wheel Drive

Most trucks and large SUVs have 4WD. It’s similar to AWD because it’s designed to send torque to all four wheels to increase traction when needed. However, 4WD is designed to handle more severe off-roading conditions. It allows you to drive over boulders or steep hills, and through deep water.

There are also part-time 4WD systems. They let you operate your vehicle in two-wheel drive (2WD) mode in normal driving conditions. Most systems also have low and high ranges. Low provides maximum traction in an off-road environment, and high is for slippery on-road conditions, like snow, ice, loose sand or gravel.
