Every year, Cars.com puts together a list of the most-American made vehicles. That way, shoppers will know what cars they can buy to help support the U.S. economy. Fourteen Honda cars have made it in the 2020 American-Made Index!* Seven landed in the top 20, which is more than any other automaker. There are three in the top ten – the Odyssey, Ridgeline and Passport. They are ranked 5th, 6th and 7th.
The Pilot is in 13th place and the Accord is in 15th. The Acura RDX is ranked 14th, and the Acura MDX is 17th. The other Honda models on the 2020 index are the CR-V, CR-V Hybrid, Civic, Insight, and Accord Hybrid. The other Acura models that made the cut are the TLX and ILX. The index features 13 total automakers and 91 American-made vehicles.
When making the list, Cars.com analyzes multiple factors related to car production. Those factors include a car’s percentage of U.S. and Canadian parts, where its engines and transmissions come from, and where the car is assembled. The site also considers how many U.S. manufacturing workers are employed by the automaker.
Almost two-thirds of Honda vehicles sold in the U.S. in 2019 were made at plants in Ohio, Indiana and Alabama. That’s the second-highest percentage of all automakers for the share of vehicles that were built and sold in America that year. More than 98 percent of all Acura models sold in the U.S. in 2019 were made in Ohio.
Rick Schostek, the executive vice president of Honda North America, Inc., said, “for more than 40 years, Honda has been committed to building products close to our customers here in the U.S., and we’re proud to have three Honda vehicles among the top 10 in the Cars.com American-Made Index.”
Schostek also said, “Honda’s commitment to local production would not be possible without the teamwork and contributions of the nearly 23,000 Honda associates who build our vehicles in the U.S. and our more than 600 American supplier partners.”
Honda produced over 1.2 million cars and light trucks in the U.S. in 2019. The automaker also purchased over $27 billion in parts and materials from U.S. suppliers that year. Almost two-thirds of the Honda and Acura automobiles sold in the U.S. were made in America in 2019. All Honda and Acura products made in the U.S. have domestic and globally-sourced parts.
Honda currently has one of the largest and most diverse U.S. manufacturing footprints of any international company operating in America. The automaker employs almost 23,000 associates at 12 plants. It has the capacity to produce over 1.2 million automobiles, 3.5 million engines, 500,000 power equipment products, and 300,000 powersports products each year.
Honda has invested over $21 billion in its U.S. manufacturing operations. Over $5.6 billion of that was invested over the past years. The automaker works with over 620 U.S. original equipment suppliers. The HondaJet advanced light jet and GE Honda HF120 turbofan engines are also manufactured in the U.S.
