Civic Type R Crate Engine Revealed at SEMA 2017

This week at SEMA 2017, Honda revealed its K20C1 Civic Type R Crate Engine! This factory-fresh engine can load your Honda up with 306 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. It’s the same engine that powers the famous Honda Civic Type R, now easily swapped into your favorite track car. This engine crate has been a huge source of speed and fun in European and Asian markets ever since it became available across the pond. Finally, the wait is over for U.S. enthusiasts, too!

This ready-to-run engine is backed by Honda reliability and known power. The 2.0L engine that appears in the Civic Type R is a DOHC direct-injected i-VTEC Turbo powerplant. It gives you 306 horsepower at 6,500 rpm, and peak 295 lb-ft of torque between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm. With beloved VTEC back in the game, this engine is a manifestation of Honda’s dedication and racing spirit. Although it now incorporates turbocharging and intercooling instead of older naturally-aspirated VTEC engines, Honda racing enthusiasts have come to love the new engine that makes the Type R one of the quickest and most fun front-wheel-drive cars on the market.

To show the applications for this awesome crate engine, Honda has displayed a Civic Si with the Type R Crate Motor at the 2017 SEMA Show. Honda engineer Kevin Boehm built this SCCA STU-class race car from an HDP-supplied 2017 Civic Si Body-in-White. It features lots of other Honda Performance Development parts, as well as Honda OEM and aftermarket parts, to enhance its race performance. Boehm also replaced the stock Civic Si engine with the 2.0L turbocharged Type R Crate Motor, which is allowed in the amateur racing class. This shows a great example of an amateur race application of this amazing engine, finally available in the United States!
