Staying on top of your car’s maintenance schedule is very important. You want to keep all of its parts working properly, and you want it to operate as long as possible. Finding a good mechanic can be tricky, though. You want to make sure they have the proper certification and a good reputation.
You also want to be sure that they’ll do a good job and not overcharge you for work. And, you want them to be familiar with your car, so they know how to fix it. Here are some questions you should ask a mechanic to ensure that you can trust them and that they’re getting the job done right.
1. Are you Automatic Service Excellence (ASE) certified?
An auto technician earns this certification when they’ve completed the required training, and received their ASE Certified Master Technicians requirements. A mechanic doesn’t need this certification, but it sets them apart from others. It also lets you know that they have exceptional training and skills.
2. Have you worked on the make and model of my car before?
Some auto repair shops specialize in certain types of cars. And, some are certified to work on certain makes and models. If you take your car to one of these shops, then you’ll know it’s being worked on by someone who’s an expert on it. Always make sure a mechanic familiar with your car so they can fix it properly.
3. How much will my estimate be?
The mechanic will give you an estimate on what it will cost to fix your car. Find out if that estimate is free, or if you’ll be charged for. And, if you have to pay for it, find out if it’s an hourly rate or a flat fee.
4. Do you give written estimates?
You want to get an estimate of what work needs to be done on your car in writing, and you want the mechanic to sign it. It should tell you what repairs your car needs, what parts are needed to complete those repairs, and the cost of labor. Then, you’ll know exactly how much you’ll owe the mechanic in the end.
5. What’s wrong with my car?
Make sure the mechanic tells you exactly what repairs your car needs. And, find out all the options you have to get hose repairs done. Ask as many questions as you want – you want to make sure you’re getting the best deal, and you’re not overcharged.
6. What caused the problem?
You’ll want to know if the problem with your car was unavoidable, or if it was preventable. Then, you can do whatever’s needed to avoid that problem in the future.
7. Will you let me know about any unexpected expenses or discoveries during repair?
Make sure the mechanic tells you about any unexpected problems they come across once they start working on your car. Then, you can give them permission to fix those problems. You don’t want to get stuck paying for additional repairs that the mechanic didn’t tell you about.
8. What’s your policy on used parts?
An auto repair shops might install used parts in your car and pass them off as new. This saves the shop money. You want to make sure you get exactly what you’re paying for. A mechanic should only put used parts in your car if they have your permission. A used part can be a cheap alternative for you if it still work properly.
9. Do you offer warranties on parts and services?
Some auto repair shops offer warranties on their parts and services. If the work the mechanic has done on your car fails or a part that’s installed stops working within a certain time frame, it might be covered. Then, you won’t have to pay to get the problem fixed. Warranties vary from shop to shop, so you should try to find ones that cover more.
10. Will I get a detailed invoice of the repairs when they’re complete?
You’ll want to keep records of all the work that’s been done on your car. If a part stops working, you’ll have proof of when it was fixed or replaced. Maintenance records also come in handy if you want to sell the car. Then, you can prove what work has been done to potential buyers.
