2019 Honda Pilot and 2018 Honda Ridgeline Cross the Rebelle Rally Finish Line
This year’s Rebelle Rally navigation race saw two first-time Honda teams cross the finish line! The 2019 Honda Pilot team and 2018 Honda Ridgeline team both finished among the top five in the Crossover class, proving their own skills and their vehicle’s capability over 1,700 miles of Nevada and California desert.
The Rebelle Rally is an all-women event that challenges a vehicle’s capability and a team’s off-roading and navigational skills. Teams have to race through 1,700 miles of desert over the course of eight days of competition. Instead of racing for speed, though, these ladies have to rely on paper maps and compasses to navigate from checkpoint to checkpoint within certain windows of time. They get bonus points for finding extra checkpoints along the way, some of which are tucked into tricky locations or extremely difficult to spot.
Two Honda teams set out and completed the race: Maria Guitar and Michelle Klein of the Ohio-based “Ridgeline Rebels” team, and Ariel Jen and Melanie Morimoto from the California-based “Desert Dreamers” team. The Ridgeline Rebels and their 2018 Honda Ridgeline finished fourth in the crossover category, just in front of the Desert Dreamers in their 2019 Honda Pilot. “The 2018 Rebelle Rally proved to be an incredibly tough event mentally, physically and spiritually, and the Honda teams did a fantastic job driving their vehicles each day,” said Emily Miller, Rebelle Rally founder. “Both the Pilot and the Ridgeline teams handled each situation professionally, intelligently, and with positive spirits throughout. It was impressive to watch, and we congratulate them and Honda for putting their associates to the ultimate authentic test.”
Both the 2019 Honda Pilot and the 2018 Honda Ridgeline used in the Rebelle Rally remained mostly stock. They had a few light modifications for additional durability and safety performance, including custom skid plates, extra ground clearance, off-road tires, and some interior modifications to store their extra tires and equipment. Both of the vehicles feature Honda’s advanced Intelligent Variable Torque Management all-wheel drive system, which is available or standard on any new model. “The feedback we got from everyone was how surprised they were by the way the Pilot performed,” said Melanie Morimoto, senior fabricator, Honda R&D Americas. “We got really off track a couple of times and ended up in some extremely rough roads more suited to 4×4 vehicles. The Pilot was a solid ride on the roughest roads.” From the Ridgeline Rebels team, Klein added, “With the Ridgeline’s Sand Mode and capable suspension, we were able to cross steep river beds, climb rocky hills, and have a comfortable ride.”
