The 2018 Honda CR-V is Motor Trend’s SUV of the Year
As the year comes to a close, blogs and magazines get together to give attention and awards to vehicles that made outstanding impressions on the community. This year, the Motor Trend SUV of the Year* is none other than the 2018 Honda CR-V! The editors at Motor Trend wanted to recognize the CR-V for its continued excellence in a highly competitive segment, and pointed out many ways that it stays ahead of the curve.
The 2018 Honda CR-V really puts the whole package together. It’s an all-around excellent choice. Since its thorough refresh, this CR-V platform manages to tie together performance, comfort, technology, and convenience. Many SUVs in the compact-SUV segment excel in one or two areas and leave consumers wanting for something. The CR-V takes home this Motor Trend win by performing well across the board and working to bring consumers everything they need. Out of 23 contenders that Motor Trend looked at, here are some of the reasons the 2018 Honda CR-V pulled ahead.
The current CR-V generation is pretty to look at, and its advancement in design keeps the CR-V looking refreshed and modern. It looks bigger and more substantial than the previous generation, and it keeps to simple, sleek lines with its exterior design. There are a few bold graphic elements like the grille and taillights that quickly identify the 2018 Honda CR-V on the road. However, the real jewel of the CR-V is its interior design. The CR-V’s cabin is extremely practical and functional, but it’s also carefully designed and beautifully put together. It’s logical and high-tech inside, with everything laid out within easy reach of the driver. The PRNDL gate is mounted high, and the climate and audio controls are easy to reach and use from the driver’s seat, as is the infotainment screen. Sitting inside the CR-V, it feels fully loaded and thought-out.
The 2018 Honda CR-V has tons of space for storage and passengers. It’s full of smart storage in the doors and among the seats, so passengers have plenty of spots to put their things away. The CR-V offers plenty of headroom and legroom in the rear, even for adults. Plus, the rear doors open nice and wide, so rear passengers won’t have trouble getting inside. There are also two USB ports for charging your device, also accessible from the rear seats. At the rear, the CR-V boasts 39.2 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up. If you need more room than that, the CR-V is one of only a few that puts easy-access fold-down levers in the load space area. You can easily fold the rear seats along the standard 60/40 split to configure your cargo area on the go. Cargo space is an important aspect of the crowded compact SUV segment, and the 2018 Honda CR-V has it in spades.
It also offers up great handling and two excellent powertrain options. You can choose the entry-level 2.4L I-4 engine, which produces 184 horsepower and 180 lb-ft of torque, that comes standard on the lower trims. However, if you want the EX, EX-L, or Touring model, you’ll get Honda’s new 1.5L turbocharged engine. It gives you an extra boost with 190 horsepower and 179 lb-ft of torque, with full power available at lower revs than its naturally-aspirated sibling. This year’s new CR-V also puts down power through Honda’s renowned CVT automatic transmission, but it’s now 113 pounds lighter than last year’s model. The CR-V handles consistently and calmly. The chassis is nicely predictable, with a tightly controlled ride. You’ll find steering to be light and accurate, and the CR-V stays planted firmly through the corners. You can also get the CR-V with AWD, which will give you better control on low-traction surfaces.
There are also lots of practical upsides to the 2018 Honda CR-V, which the folks at Motor Trend think deserves praise as much as surprising sports cars do. The CR-V gets impressive fuel economy, especially compared to others in its segment. A fully-loaded CR-V Touring with the CVT transmission weighs 3,481 pounds, but the turbocharged engine returns an EPA-rated** 27 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway. The 2018 Honda CR-V is also full of high-tech safety features. It continues to score top marks in crash safety tests, and Honda’s comprehensive suite of safety features helps you avoid crashing in the first place. Honda Sensing includes functions like lane keeping assist, collision mitigation braking, and more safety and driver assist technology.
It’s also an easy, intuitive system to use and respond to. Road testers at Motor Trend were particularly impressed with the Honda Sensing lane keeping assist, which they said is one of the few systems on the market which consistently senses the correct edge of the road. They also loved that the CR-V lets you activate cruise control and lane keep assist independently, whereas many other lane keep assist systems only work in tandem with active cruise control. One road test editor called Honda Sensing “one of the most advanced driver-assistance systems on the market,” and remarked on how amazing it is to get this capable, comprehensive system on an affordable family crossover. Honda Sensing comes standard on 2018 Honda CR-V models on the EX trim and above.
