15 Easy and Affordable Car Cleaning Hacks

,

You don’t have to dish out hundreds of dollars to detail your car. There are tons of everyday household cleaners that can rejuvenate the look and smell of your ride. Like toothpaste and dish soap. We’ve gathered up the top 10 hacks you should try today. Just remember to always perform a test spot in a hidden location to make sure the product works on your car.

1. Toothpaste

Headlight Restoration – Highly abrasive paste can remove light to moderate oxidation from the lenses. Put some on a microfiber cloth or toothbrush and wipe or scrub in a circular motion. Heavily-oxidized or pitted lights might require sanding first.

Paint Scratch Removal – Light- or medium-abrasive paste can remove some scratches. Put some on a microfiber cloth and wipe the paint in a gentle circular motion. Don’t use too much pressure, otherwise you could worsen the defect.

2. Baking Soda

Stain/Odor Removal – Fill a spray bottle with vinegar and presoak the stain. Then cover it with baking soda. Spray the stain with more vinegar and scrub it with a nylon brush. Dip the brush in hot water, scrub the area again, and go over it with a vacuum for a deeper clean.

3. Dish Soap

Car Wash – Mix one ounce of soap per gallon of water for a car shampoo. It can remove most grease and contamination from paint or glass.

Bug Removal – Mix one ounce of soap per gallon of water to remove a moderate amount of bugs. If they’ve been in the hot sun, use one-and-a-half to two ounces of soap per gallon of water.

Stain Removal – Add one-and-a-half teaspoons of soap per liter of water to make a stain remover. Spray it on the stain and scrub it with a nylon brush. Use a microfiber cloth to blot the area. Finish with hot water and a vacuum for a deeper clean.

4. White Vinegar

Stain Removal – Mix white vinegar with hot water at a 1-to-5 ratio. Spray the stain and scrub it with a nylon brush. Blot the area with a towel. Finish with hot water and a vacuum hack for a deeper clean.

Glass Cleaning – Mix vinegar with distilled water at a 2-to-1 ratio. Spray it on the windows and wipe away. To get rid of water spots, use a more potent mixture and leave it on for longer.

Metal Polishing – Mix equal parts vinegary and water. Spray it on stainless steel exhaust tips and bumpers. Wipe it off with a microfiber cloth. Use fine-greed steel wool if the area is very dirty or corroded.

5. Hydrogen Peroxide

Stain/Odor Removal – Dilute the peroxide with distilled water at a 1-to-1 ratio. Apply it to the stain, scrub it with a nylon brush, and blot it with a microfiber cloth. Finish with hot water and a vacuum for a deeper clean.

6. Isopropyl Alcohol

Adhesive/Ink Removal – Apply the alcohol to a microfiber cloth. Then wipe away the adhesive or scrub away the ink.

Glass Cleaning – Mix four parts 91% alcohol with one part distilled water, or three parts 70% alcohol with one part water. Apply it to a microfiber cloth and wipe the windows.

Wiper Blade Cleaning – Apply the alcohol to a microfiber cloth. Then wipe away dirt and debris on the blades.

7. Baby Soap or Pet Shampoo

Car Wash – Mix one ounce of either product per gallon of water for a car shampoo. It’s gentler than dish soap and won’t strip wax or sealant from the paint.

8. Ice Cubes

Gum Removal – Remove as much of the gum as you can with your fingers. Cover what’s left with a freezer bag filled with ice cubes. Leave it there until the gum has stiffened. Gently peel it off and scrub away any remnants with a toothbrush.

9. Steel Wool

Glass Cleaning – Spray glass cleaner on the windows and gently scrub them with the finest grade of steel wool. Dry them with a squeegee or microfiber cloth.

Metal Polishing – Apply metal polish to stainless steel exhaust tips. Then rub with them with the finest grade steel wool. Use a coarser grade for corrosion or heavy carbon build-up.

10. Melanine Sponge

Ink Removal – Wet the sponge and gently scrub away the ink. You can also use isopropyl alcohol for a more powerful clean.

Paint Scuff Removal – Remove any loose contamination from the scuffs. Then wipe side to side with a damp sponge. If they’re not completely gone, add toothpaste and keep scrubbing.

Wheel Cleaning – Clean the wheel faces with a damp sponge first. Then move on to the dirtier wheel barrels. The order is important so you don’t scratch the finish.

11. Toothbrush

Crevice Cleaning – Use a soft-bristle brush on hard-to-reach places in the cabin and on the body of the car.

Headlight Restoration – Use a medium- or hard-bristle brush with toothpaste on the lenses. Heavily-oxidized or pitted lights might require sanding first.

12. Air Compressor

Crevice Cleaning – Blow out anything in hard-to-reach places. Then vacuum it up.

Car Drying – Blow water out of the grille, mirrors, door jambs, and panel gaps before drying the paint.

13. Razor Blade

Glass Cleaning – Wipe away any loose contamination from the windows. Then scrape away any stubborn contamination with a metal blade.

Adhesive Removal – Preheat the glue with a hairdryer. Use a metal blade on glass and a plastic blade on paint.

14. Shower Squeegee

Glass Cleaning – Clean the windows with one of the above methods and dry them completely. Then wipe with a wet squeegee from top to bottom. Shake excess water after each pass for the best results.

Pet Hair Removal – Vacuum up loose pet hair on upholstery. Then wipe it with a dry squeegee in alternating directions to get what’s left.

15. Massage Gun

Sand Removal – Vacuum up as much sand as possible. Use the massage tool on the upholstery to bring what’s left to the surface. Then vacuum again.
